A new song, with a strong flavour of Afrobeat, direct from the source. This track was written and recorded on the road with Made Kuti, and members of The Positive Force.
Whilst touring recently with Femi Kuti & the Positive Force, I decided to try recording a new track using just my iPad and a small interface. Recorded in dressing rooms, stages, on the tour bus, and even the Starstruck (tour bus company) yard, the musicians brought a flavour of Lagos to this song, which evolved while travelling around Europe. It may be a little rough around the edges compared to efforts recorded in studios, but nonetheless I think it has a great feel and spirit to it.
The lyrics reflect the central message of the tour, listening to Femi every night encouraging audiences to be the positive change that the world needs. Femi’s son Made, an incredible artist in his own right, contributed the main melody on the trumpets and tenor saxes over a rough rhythm I’d recorded on percussion, and the song evolved from there as each musician made their contribution.
I’m extremely grateful to Made and the Positive Force musicians who so kindly indulged my love of making and recording music. I hope you enjoy listening to the result, and take something of the feel and the message with you!
